step 13 history

In 1983 our capacity was thirteen people. Today we have a capacity for one hundred-forty people and average ninety people year to year. Since our beginning, we have served over four thousand people. We average fifteen requests per week to enter step 13. Of the fifteen requests, ten will show up and enter the program. Of the ten, six will leave within thirty days for reasons of their own or breaking program rules, failed urine screens, curfew violations or general rule violations. The remaining four will stay from one to three years and complete the program. In 1998, forty people were in the program from six months to two years. The remaining people had been at step 13 from two to six months. We average one hundred residents from year to year.

Notes from Bob

God gives every bird its food but does not throw the food in its nest. God also gives each bird the material to make its nest but does build it for the bird; the bird has to do its part. Of course, if a bird is unable to fly, we should take care of him. But there are many who could fly but don’t or won’t. These need a nudge out of the nest, not just a cozy place in it. They might fall, but it’s the only way they’ll ever get to soar to new heights.

At step 13, we're proud to be 52% self-sufficient without taking federal, state, or city funding. Help us raise that number.
